There are five common species of Cucurbita: ficcifolia (chilacayote squash and malabar gourd) and pepo (jack-o-laternary, delicate squash, ornamented gourds), mixta (cucurba and winter squashes), moschata ('shakedown fields' and pumpkins' from the long island) and pepo (jack-o'-lander). The desire to cross-pollinate each species with its species will produce interesting offspring. People are buying up their types of pumpkins and it is difficult for dusty orange ones to create the ideal specimen on the porch or in front of the shop on the local market. You saw the white, the green, the big, and the squat, so what are their names and species? What type do you select, and how do you choose a decent one, whether you need the right types of pumpkin to carve or to cook?
