As of this writing, there is no change in GMRS. It is still a licensed, regulated service. If you go to the FCC ULS website, you will find what you need to do to get licensed properly. It is currently $85.00 for 5 years. You will have to get an FCC ID and CORES password, but, these are free. GMRS is very popular and new repeaters are going up on a regular basis. Perhaps, the steady licensing fee income has made the case for GMRS sufficiently. It is an important viable communication method that is very useful as well as enjoyable for the general non ham population. Having said this, many hams also hold GMRS licenses.
