  1. Site needs 2 front ends.. one for consumers and others for regular users/professionals

Those of us who live at this site prefer the old way with everything right there. This new site is too "consumerish" and is great for Mabel Brown from Squattingpigeon, MO who is visiting the website to complain about getting calls at 2 in the morning despite her insistence that she's on the "do not call" list.. This new site (IMHO) disenfranchises the professional user. Also, with budget cuts and a possible government shutdown, I would not exactly put candy coating the website at the top of the list. Perhaps staffing up the Audio Bureau would be more prudent.

We are looking into ways to provide a tailored experience for frequent users of FCC.gov based on feedback we have heard from users.

Would love to hear suggestions on features you would be most interested in adding to a “professional user” interface as we begin to develop this.

Daily Digest? Improved EDOCs search? Easy access to ECFS?

    Send us your ideas.

  2. amateur radio

There's no links for amateur radio or other licensing issues directly. There should be something separating the consumer and business sites!

  3. Gracefully degrade where javascript is used

Javascript is heavily used on various parts of the page such as the top navigation, banner graphics, view settings bar, slideshow, and more. These items should gracefully degrade when javascript is disabled. The menus should still work, the slideshow should display just one item and possibly hide controls, etc.

  5. Fast lane pages for regular users.

Reestablish a way for frequent users to see all the most frequently used links on one or two short pages (think laptop). Scrolling through "Encyclopedias" is fine for beginners but very inefficient for regular users. And don't leave any old links out. You might not think we use them but unless you track usage, don't assume that. Here is an example: under the new WTB page, what happen to the wireless databases links that let you then run a General Menu Report Search?

  11. Make the 3 actions more graphically obvious!

Right now the 'Take Action' button is _way_ too small, it takes up <5% of the screen area and is overshadowed by the rotating graphics etc - but it's the most important part of the page!

I'd suggest eliminating the 'click to drop down' behavior and make four large static buttons (perhaps each with a graphic) for 'complain, comment, discuss, help'. These buttons should be the primary focus of the 'above the fold' page, taking up the majority of the real estate. Perhaps a horizontal tiling of the four large buttons, with the scrolling graphic features below and the newsroom…

  13. "Official Documents" Suggestions

It appears that "Official Documents" is intended to replace edocs. If so it should include a few additional features beyond what it has in the beta:
    (1) It requires docket search and date range search
    (2) The various filters on the right could prove very useful. One recommendation: everywhere throughout the site where there is a list of filters, check all/uncheck all buttons should be included
    (3) One of the nice things about edocs is the "Full Report" feature, which gives you useful information like the FCC Record citation, or a contact person at the FCC, where appropriate. Similar information…

Thanks ‘Function Over Form’ for the very useful feedback on how we can improve the Official Documents section of the site.

The spirit behind the Beta release was exactly this— to give super-users of FCC.gov like yourself the opportunity to provide valuable input on how to improve the redesign.

We’re looking into all three of your suggestions now. Many thanks.

We should be able to email a page as a means of sharing it.

  15. Search autocomplete is completely useless / broken

The search suggestions/autocomplete is totally broken (using Firefox 4). I type in "file a complaint" and the results are a garbled mess of text which reads something to the effect of "file a complaintfile a complaintsfile a complaintshtmfile a complaint1file a complaints1" (unfortunately I can't post a screenshot).

Dev team should probably do a little bit of actual browser testing before launching a >$1M website... not entirely competent, honestly.

  16. Improving user interactions with top news displayer

On the front page, there is a top news/story displayer that constantly switches between the various stories.
Currently, there are two problems with this:
First, the title of the story is not link when it should be. I think you will find that most users will think that the title is a link, as is often the case, when it is not.
Second, the clickable space for switching between the different stories is too small. I can't find the research paper on this right now, but increasing the interaction space is nearly almost always helpful. It may also be useful…

Great suggestion. As we enter the next phase of the redesign, revamping the “help” section of the site is at the top of the list.

What kind of support would be most helpful to have live chat available for? Ex: transactional assistance, consumer support, etc.

  18. Make the search application more thorough

I look for decisions and orders that I know exist, but they fail to be disclosed. In one case, I inserted the actual title of the docket and asked the search tool to search under "title", and though I knew there were at least three orders, the search only listed one. I don't recall that happening in the past. It worries me. Has the search functionality been modified? I'd rather have too many hits and trust how I can narrow them down than know that important ones are simply missing.

  19. Updates to ECFS?

Will ECFS be updated as well? After clicking "take action," would like a better way to search/organize/submit comments within a proceeding, rather than just being able to submit comments into the ether.

  20. Fix Z-index on YouTube videos. Right now if you scroll down on a video page it overlaps the toolbar.

Go to a page with a YouTube video like http://beta.fcc.gov/blog/broadband-jobs-and-innovation . If you scroll down the video will overlap the toolbar/header at least on Google Chrome.
