CLOSED: A New FCC.gov - Feedback

This forum is now closed. There will be future opportunities to comment on the FCC.gov website.*

We will be rolling out updates to the new FCC.gov on a regular basis. Share your thoughts and ideas on what to add to the next release, or ways we can improve the user experience or functionality on FCC.gov.

  1. Consider the [Crowd] Source

I see where this beta site is trying to go, but I think it goes too far. I applaud the attempt, but graphics should be used judiciously to prevent "information overload" by breaking up text with aesthetically pleasing art. In this case, the graphics dominate the front page, leaving very little visual space to convey meaningful content. Because this is a government website upon which people rely to obtain information, we can strike a better balance. The graphics can be smaller and achieve the same effects. The "feature" videos can be placed in a "meet the FCC" space, as Function…

  2. Looks very gov 2.0

presentation layer is important, but what happens when my corn plants shift 10 inches to the left?

  3. Improving user interactions with top news displayer

On the front page, there is a top news/story displayer that constantly switches between the various stories.
Currently, there are two problems with this:
First, the title of the story is not link when it should be. I think you will find that most users will think that the title is a link, as is often the case, when it is not.
Second, the clickable space for switching between the different stories is too small. I can't find the research paper on this right now, but increasing the interaction space is nearly almost always helpful. It may also be useful…

  4. amateur radio

There's no links for amateur radio or other licensing issues directly. There should be something separating the consumer and business sites!

  5. Generally like. RSS button missing in URL Bar.

Works well when browser has JS/Plugins and Images turned off. A sign of best of breed dev. Major points here.

Missing RSS button in URL Bar (I see link at the bottom, though). Would prefer a category-based site combined with a blog (instead of just a blog with some links on the side) BUT do love just how accessible you guys are - tons of contact, action and support links. Very nice.

My first visit to fcc.gov and the old site with proprietary DOC files are a major turn-off so this update is already infinitely better. Thanks and thank you…

  6. Clarify social sharing features

It's great that you're including the FCC's social media channels and social sharing features on this beta site. I would like to suggest either different icons or arrangement for the channels, however. Right now, they are rather dark and shaded when the user doesn't have their mouse hovered over the icons. To me, that makes the social sharing icons below them stand out more.

  7. If you don't know the docket number - how do you find it?

The new design has a list of the 10 most popular dockets, but finding others requires a priori knowledge of the docket number - a major problem.

An old approach to this problem for OET dockets still lingers in the chaos of the current site:http://www.fcc.gov/oet/info/docket_comments/

This would be a good model for docket in general that don't make the top 10. Indeed, finding comment due dates in general shouldn't be so difficult.

  9. Subject/Issue scroller

I'd like to see a sort of searchable menu on the left or right of the page. Major and current issues or operations for the FCC and then you can instantly see the list, search it and then comment or read about it. Having the main center of the page with a few pics and headers is nice and attractive but not fully functional.

  12. Mobile Safari floating search + title disappear

In Mobile Safari, the floating search and title div don't use the fixed position of the viewport, but slide under the top edge. Then, scrolling back to the top of the page shows the wrong graphic position.

  13. Site needs 2 front ends.. one for consumers and others for regular users/professionals

Those of us who live at this site prefer the old way with everything right there. This new site is too "consumerish" and is great for Mabel Brown from Squattingpigeon, MO who is visiting the website to complain about getting calls at 2 in the morning despite her insistence that she's on the "do not call" list.. This new site (IMHO) disenfranchises the professional user. Also, with budget cuts and a possible government shutdown, I would not exactly put candy coating the website at the top of the list. Perhaps staffing up the Audio Bureau would be more prudent.

We are looking into ways to provide a tailored experience for frequent users of FCC.gov based on feedback we have heard from users.

Would love to hear suggestions on features you would be most interested in adding to a “professional user” interface as we begin to develop this.

Daily Digest? Improved EDOCs search? Easy access to ECFS?

    Send us your ideas.

  14. Need more contrast in blue on blue & Display Options text at top.

Especially if it (medium blue bar) will be used for messaging in the future.

  16. Remove transitional doctype and move to html5. Build for the future, not the past.

The doctype for the site is "transitional". Change this to match today's standard for the new web site. Set the doctype to <!DOCTYPE html>, then design and fix issues.

  17. Exploring spectrum back button broken

When I visit the Spectrum Dashboard on Google Chrome and then select Browse Spectrum Bands my websites back button stops working properly.

In particular, if, from that page, I select "Radio" and then press "Search", and the try to use my back button, it immediately redirects me to the search results page.

  18. Changing the font size breaks rendering in firefox 4

Changing the font size to large creates a very odd looking broken fcc logo in current Firefox 4.

  19. Roll out this idea to ALL .Gov sites

Propose this site layout to all .Gov entities. It might not work for all; but for say, National Labs, it would be a plus.

  20. Search autocomplete is completely useless / broken

The search suggestions/autocomplete is totally broken (using Firefox 4). I type in "file a complaint" and the results are a garbled mess of text which reads something to the effect of "file a complaintfile a complaintsfile a complaintshtmfile a complaint1file a complaints1" (unfortunately I can't post a screenshot).

Dev team should probably do a little bit of actual browser testing before launching a >$1M website... not entirely competent, honestly.
